  • South Dakota Driver’s License or Nondriver ID Card: Issued by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
  • U.S. Government ID: Includes passports and military ID cards.
  • Tribal ID Card: Issued by a tribal government.
  • Student ID: Issued by a South Dakota high school or postsecondary education institution.
  • These IDs must be valid and not expired.

Requesting an Absentee Ballot: Download and print the absentee ballot application, ensure you’re registered, and mail the signed application to your County Election Official. Military and overseas voters can submit via fax or email.
In-Person Absentee Voting: Begins at the County Auditor’s office with a valid photo ID or a signed personal identification affidavit.
Deadlines: Application must be received by 5 p.m. the day before the election; voted ballots must arrive on Election Day before polls close.
Military/Overseas and Independent Voters: Special provisions for military and overseas voters; Independents can choose a Democratic or Non-Political ballot for primaries.
Emergency Voting: Sick or disabled voters can use an authorized messenger to deliver and return absentee ballots by 3 p.m. on Election Day.
